ROUND TABLE

O ensino do inglês e do espanhol nas escolas públicas de Santa Catarina: políticas e realidades

Speakers:
Representative of Secretaria da Educação, Maria José Damiani Costa (Spanish),
Marimar da Silva (English),
Moderator: Rosane Silveira

CAMBRIDGE WORKSHOP:

“Spicing up your lessons with Low Cost and Low Prep Activities”
Abstract: In this workshop, teachers will have a taste of a myriad of hands-on activities they can implement in the classroom without spending too much time or money.
Speaker: Maiza Fatureto has a BA in Portuguese and English, a post graduation in International Marketing, and the Cambridge International Certificate in ELT. Over the last twenty years, she has worked with teaching and teacher training, and is a coauthor of The Cambridge Teen Readers.

WORKSHOP I:

“Translation and English Language Teaching”

Abstract: This workshop describes a variety of translation activities that attempt to build on what the learner already knows. It is contended that the potential of translation as a classroom resource is so great that its role should merit considerable attention in the EFL classroom.

Speaker: Lincoln P. Fernandes holds an M.A. and a PhD in Applied Linguistics in English Language (Translation). He has been a teacher of EFL since 1990 and currently teaches ESP and Research Methodology at Faculdades Barddal and Instituto do Saber de Ensino Superior, respectively. Additionally, he participates in two postgraduate programmes and is a freelance translator.

WORKSHOP II:

Abstract: It is important for EFL teachers to understand different kinds of texts and new ways of reading so as to motivate students and make them aware of the importance of reading images and texts as complementary information sources. In this workshop, we’ll briefly discuss basic concepts related to Critical Reading (text, hypertext and images). Then
we will share ideas on classroom activities to help students develop critical reading skills.

Speaker:
Viviane M. Heberle holds a doctorate from UFSC, where she also teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on EFL teaching, gender, functional grammar and discourse analysis. She taught at Westhill College in Birmingham, UK and was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Sydney, Australia.

WORKSHOP III:

“Reflections about Grammar Teaching”

Abstract: Questions such as - Why teaching grammar? How to approach grammar in the classroom? How not to teach it? and What role does grammar play in my teaching? - seem to be at the core of some of the teachers’ anxieties and reflections. Thus, departing from your experiences as teachers as well as from theoretical and empirical issues that have been informing L2 pedagogy, the present workshop aims at shedding some light on these questions and also exploring a range of grammar teaching options.

Speaker: Raquel D’Ely holds a doctoral degree in Applied Linguistics from UFSC, where she is a lecturer in the Departamento de Línguas Estrangeiras. Her main areas of interest are L2 acquisition, speech production, and teacher development.

WORKSHOP IV:

“Practical EFL Reading Activities”

Abstract: This workshop aims at highlighting some reading strategies and techniques so as to help teachers to improve reading classes. The intention is to show how different reading techniques can be a powerful device to increase learners’ motivation and to provide thorough support for developing the reading skill.

Speaker: Denise de M. Corrêa holds an M.A. Degree in Language and Literature from UFSC. Currently, she is working as a sub-coordinator for the extracurricular course at UFSC and also as a ESP teacher at SENAI. Lately, she has been developing materials about reading techniques and film uses in the classroom.
