ENGLISH TEACHERS LET’S GET TOGETHER !

FLORIANÓPOLIS SEMINAR
WORKSHOP I

Literature in the area of L2 strategy instruction asserts that learners can be taught to employ conscious actions in order to make language learning easier, faster, and more enjoyable (Oxford, 1990). As a result, the teaching of language learning strategies can also produce an impact on L2 learning by empowering students to become more autonomous, and more responsible for their own learning. Recent research also suggests that L2 strategy instruction is viewed as ‘the wake up call’ to language learning (Cohen, 1998). That is, learners are encouraged to move from a passive to a more active role in L2 classrooms by learning how to employ specific actions to enhance language learning. Bearing in mind the assumption that strategy instruction can yield a positive impact on L2 learning, the objectives of this workshop are: 1) to unfold the main features of the ‘wake up call’ by practising activities to enhance L2 learning; 2) to present a brief overview of theoretical issues on L2 language learning strategies; and, 3) to discover why strategic learners are more successful at language learning.
